Figure 6.1 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year serious mental illness among persons aged 18 or older, by State, for 2001. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (8.18 to 10.36 percent) were Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia. States in the next highest group (7.64 to 8.17 percent) were Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Vermont. States in the mid group (7.30 to 7.63 percent) were Alabama, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, and Virginia. States in the next lowest group (6.95 to 7.29 percent) were Alaska, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. States in the lowest group (5.12 to 6.94 percent) were Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, New Hampshire, and New Jersey.
