The NHSDA Report:  Finding Specific Variables in the NHSDA

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive (SAMHDA) online data analysis system is provided by the Office of Applied Studies within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The SAMHDA contains a search feature for conducting variable level searches among the numerous studies included in the archive's online data analysis system.  This report provides an overview of the SAMHDA search tool, a new feature that searches the question text, the variable labels, and value labels to find the specific variables of interest.  In addition, the report provides search tips  and examples of the variable level search utility, using SAMHSA's 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA).

Persons wanting to do their own data analysis might find  OAS's data systems   helpful as well as background and other information on SAMHSA's data analysis system (SAMHDA).

The short reports based on SAMHSA's  National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), are produced by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   The NHSDA also provides estimates for drug use by state.
